The Net

i just watch a movie title 'The Net' which is all about the usage and the impact of computer-mediated communication which is directed by Irwin Winkler. Sandra Bullock plays a major role in this movie as Angela Bennett, a computer expert work in Cathedral System. She played as a young, beautiful and intelligent carrier woman who has her own lifestyle. She worked from home and never mixes up with other fellow people around her. In this movie, her introverted character brings a big trouble for her. Besides communicating with her cyber friends in virtual world and her mom, the only person that she communicates with is Dale Hessman (played by Ray McKinnon), her colleagues. They work together for a new internet program, The Gatekeeper System which able to hack highly confidential computer system such as government and military by clicks π at the lower- right corner. However, Dale was died in a plane crashes and Angela met with another computer expert, Jack Devlin (Jeremy Northam) in her trips in Mexico. Same as Dale, Angela was nearly killed by the guy that she met because of the diskette that contained the internet program. She managed to escape but the situation become worst because she found that her identity was change by somebody. She is no longer Angela, but Ruth Marx, a drug dealer. This is the climax of this movie where she has to find a proof that she is Angela because all of her document was stolen.
As she didn’t communicate with people around her and work from home, nobody can recognize her and her mother (Diane Baker) was suffering from Alzheimer. Thus, the only person that can proof her identity is her former lover, Dr. Alan Champion acted by Dennis Miller. In the process to get back her identity and to get the hackers behind the bars, Alan was killed. Thus, there is no one left to help her. Therefore, she works on her own by trying to enter the Cathedral System and find the information about the hackers. She found out that the real Ruth Marx acted by Wendy Gazelle is using her identity. The hackers, Ruth and Jack, the guy she met in Mexico plan to install their own Gatekeeper software to the government and military computer system. However, Angela makes a trick by using fire alarm and manages to copy all the evidence of the hackers plan in the diskette and hand it to FBI through email. When everything is done, the hackers arrive and click the button escape to delete what Angela done. However, this brilliant Angela releases a virus: Trojan horse by clicking the button escape that able to delete the entire file in the computer system. She manages to escape from the hackers and Jack accidentally killed the real Ruth because he thought that she is Angela. At the end of the movie, Angela killed Jack and based on the evidence she gets her life back and lives with her mom.

In the nutshell, I can say that this movie is an interesting movie that highlight on the usage of the usage and the impact of computer-mediated communication. In addition, this movie also emphasize that nobody cannot lives alone. We need each other and that is why the interpersonal relationship is important. the best part of this movie is when the director emphasize on the capability of a young woman. this movie didn't underestimate woman as other movie did. it shows that women are capable and multitasking.
